Let’s Do Lunch

Levi and Jim meet at Slate Creek Elementary.

The 2010 – 2011 school year marked the launch of the school-based mentoring program at Youth Horizons. We have researched school-based mentoring for the past several years, and decided it was time to take the plunge and give it a try.
In the program, mentors meet with children for 40 minutes to one hour over their lunch period. The school-based program is similar to our other mentoring program, but the primary difference is that mentors only meet with the children at school for mentor convenience.

We organized our school-based mentoring around a church partnership model. We looked for schools that were interested in having Youth Horizons mentors and then found churches that would be willing to partner with those schools. This first year, we launched three church partnerships. River Community Church provided 11 mentors at Brooks Middle School; Glen Park Christian Church provided five mentors at Rae Woodman Elementary; and Grace Community Church in Newton provided five mentors at Slate Creek Elementary.

If you work at a school or are involved in a church where you would like to see a Youth Horizons school-based mentoring program developed, please email Rodney at rodney@youthhorizons.net.
