Mentor Refresher Recap

Linda and Chalyssa

“I appreciate him because he spends a lot of time with me. Pretty much he’s like family with ours.”

“I learned from her how to do my manners…”

“How to eat lots of vegetables…”

“Thank you for not giving up on me.”

These are just a few of the things protégés from the mentoring program had to say to their mentors in a video shown at the Mentor Refresher Jan. 31. The kids were asked two questions, “What is one of your favorite memories with your mentor?” and “What is something you’ve learned from your mentor?” You can watch the video on our Facebook page, Facebook.com/YouthHorizons.

Earnest Alexander smoked brisket for dinner and it was served along with baked potatoes and salad. Dinner provided the opportunity for good conversation and laughter as mentors met and talked over dinner and the cheesecake dessert. The video was shown after dinner. The evening moved from the video into mentors sharing triumphs and struggles from their matches. It gave everyone there the chance to encourage one another and pray for the kids we serve.

Earnest sang and spoke as the evening progressed.  One of the things that he talked about was that mentoring “is not about us.” Yes, mentors get a lot of out of investing in someone else, but it is ultimately not about how good they feel or how much fun they have. He challenged mentors to stay the course and commit to faithfulness.
