Youth Horizons National Mentoring Month Recap

January was National Mentoring Month. That’s a time to raise awareness about the benefits of mentoring and to remind our community about the need for more mentors. Our Mentoring Team accomplished this by engaging YH partners and other stakeholders. We did this across multiple platforms and by obtaining a Mentoring Month proclamation from the Sedgwick County Commission. There were a number of activities executed for National Mentoring Month. One included video public service announcements from local leaders: Mayor Brandon Whipple, City Councilman Brandon Johnson, Commissioner Jim Howell and others. Youth Horizons also was featured in two media stories from KWCH: a report on the YH community mentoring program; and a second report on the Wren Home for Girls’ groundbreaking scheduled to air later this month.

There was also an Op-Ed piece in The Eagle by YH President Robert Garner. Also, a video testimonials from YH mentors and parents. We deemed January 28 as Mentoring Appreciation Day to express our gratitude for YH mentors. On that day, we served come-and-go box lunch and dinner and provided mentors with resource materials. We posted National Mentoring Month content throughout the month on YH Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter platforms. Please keep our mentoring awareness efforts in prayer as we support our more than 120 Mentor-Protégé matches and 40 plus Waiting List youth in the midst of the ongoing pandemic.
