Matches End, Friendships Begin
Matches End, Friendships Begin
This time of year is always bittersweet at Youth Horizons. Every summer, we say farewell and thank you to Mentor-Protégé matches coming to a formal close in our program. While mentoring relationships formally close under Youth Horizons’ supervision at age18, we are thrilled when these matches continue to be involved in each other’s lives. For example, take Linda and Lyssa. They have been matched for more than eight years. One thing Lyssa says she learned from being matched with Linda is that even though you may not agree on everything, you can still be friends. They have become like family and plan to stay connected in the future.
The longevity of matches like this one speaks to the power of showing up. Mentors walk alongside youth through life’s many ups and downs. To all of our current Mentors, we pray these long-standing matches serve as an encouragement. An encouragement to you as you continue showing up and sticking to it.
We will recognize youth who are phasing out of our program at our annual Awards Party. The party is scheduled as a come-and-go event from 2-6 p.m. on June 3 at North Rock Lanes. From 3:30-4:30 p.m., we will pause bowling and other activities to hold the awards ceremony on-site. We want to thank and recognize the following matches: Linda Bryant and Lyssa, Lisa Francis and Tyrenea, Dean Eklund and Amarion, Marylnn Branam and Alexis, Leon Gamber and Vaughn, Lisa Cherney and Olivia, Olive Ashenfelter and Thalia, Daniel Page and Joseph, Charles Dyson and Martin, and Tim Breitigan and Tulio.
