Match Highlight – David Lewis and Corban

Corban and David Lewis celebrated their third year together in February through the mentoring program at Youth Horizons. It didn’t take long for them to discover that they have a lot of things in common. They both have a love for classic cars, fishing and boating, putting model cars together, and eating at Texas Roadhouse. In fact, a typical outing is for the two of them to start Thursday afternoon together at Texas Roadhouse. They are so well known there, as soon as they walk in the door, the hostess will tell them if their favorite server is available or not. They estimate they have eaten at Texas Roadhouse on Thursday evenings over 100 times in the past 3 years, and joke about where are we going to eat tonight while on their way to Texas Roadhouse.

Depending on the time of year, after dinner they will go to David’s house and will take the boat out, go fishing, work on a model car, or play table games that include David’s wife Patty. So far, they have built 7 model cars and a scaled V8 engine that has moving parts that is powered by batteries. Corban has met many of David’s car club buddies and is on a first name basis with them. Some of them will give Corban model car kits to assemble at David’s house, they currently have 7 more models to put together. David and Corban have been invited to many classic car shops to have personal hands-on tour of their cars and at times are given rides in an awesome vintage car. The guys at the car shows are amazed at Corban’s knowledge of older cars and the engines that power them. Corban lights up if David pulls up to Corban’s house on a Thursday afternoon and he is driving his 1968 Chevelle.

David said that Corban has learned many skills that past three years. He has learned the following: Casting a rod and reel and how to bring in a fish, driving a pontoon boat, helping do minor repairs to an automobile, “smoke” a Teriyaki pork tenderloin on a Traeger grill. Although the two participate in a lot of fun activities, when needed they do homework together as well as complete Youth Horizon goals. There have been times when Corban assists David with small projects around the house, and volunteers to do projects with David for senior citizens. David feels it is important to involve Corban with handyman type of skills as well as just doing fun projects.
