How Eley’s Birthday Stepped Up the Boys
by · Sep 2, 2025
One birthday party. Seventy pairs of shoes. One hundred twenty pairs of socks. Discover how one person’s small idea – and the support of her community – transformed back-to-school confidence for every boy at the ranch.
Eley works as a community support and advocacy coordinator for Simply Hygiene. A few months ago, she joined her team on a site visit to the Boys Ranch. There, she met staff, connected with the boys, and heard about their daily lives. One detail stuck with her—many of the boys’ shoes were worn down, riddled with holes from the gravel roads they walked each day. It wasn’t just about footwear. As Eley remembered from her time working in Oklahoma schools, shoes carry weight with young people. They symbolize identity, belonging, and confidence. She had seen firsthand how kids were teased, even hurt, because of their shoes. This knowledge tugged at her heart.
When her birthday approached in July, Eley decided to act. Instead of gifts, she asked friends and family to bring a pair of shoes to her celebration. The idea resonated. Shoes came in. But with 28 boys to serve, the need was still greater. So she took to social media. For several days, she shared her mission, inviting others to join in. The response was overwhelming.
Donations poured in—some gave money, others contributed new shoes and socks. With these gifts, Eley stretched every dollar, purchasing even more pairs. The final tally? 70 pairs of shoes and 120 pairs of socks. More than enough to outfit every boy with something new, sturdy, and confidence-boosting for the school year.
The impact was about more than the items delivered. It was about the message: You matter. You are seen. You are worth investing in. For boys who have faced hardship, these tangible expressions of care build confidence and restore dignity. Eley’s story is a reminder of what can happen when someone sees a need and chooses to act. It’s also proof that community generosity—friends, family, and even strangers on social media—can multiply one person’s vision into something far greater.
The best part? Anyone can replicate this kind of impact. Whether it’s a birthday, an anniversary, or another milestone, turning personal celebrations into moments of giving is a powerful way to bless others. If you’ve ever thought, “I want to make a difference, but I’m not sure how,” consider hosting your own fundraiser. Start with your circle. Ask friends and family to give in a way that supports youth in need. Your small idea could spark life-changing impact. Because sometimes, the gift of new shoes is really the gift of hope.
