Waiting for a Christian Mentor: 40+ Kids in Our Community

As you read this, more than 40 kids in our community are on the waiting list for a Christian mentor through Youth Horizons. Among them, 10 have been waiting for over a year. Meanwhile, the potential in their lives sits ready to be unlocked – when someone steps forward.

Why Mentors Matter and What the Research Says

Mentorship is more than a nice thing to do – it’s a protective, shaping force in a young life.

  • Youth who meet regularly with mentors are 46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs and 27% less likely to begin drinking compared with peers without mentors. (mentoring.org)
  • Students with mentors are 52% less likely to skip a day of school and 37% less likely to skip a class.
  • In a randomized trial of Big Brothers Big Sisters, after 18 months, mentored youth were 54% less likely to be arrested and 41% less likely to engage in substance use than peers in the control group. (publichealth.uic.edu)
  • Longitudinal studies show that relationships with natural mentors (e.g., non-parental adults) are linked to improved psychological well-being, higher academic achievement, and – especially for youth without father figures – greater economic gains over time. (pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov)
  • Youth who report prosocial relationships with mentors tend to enjoy stronger life satisfaction, better social outcomes, and higher educational attainment. (evidencebasedmentoring.org)

These aren’t small perks. They are meaningful shifts in life trajectory. For kids who fall into the gap of developmental needs and resources, a consistent, caring mentor can be a stabilizing force and a bridge to hope.

The Human Toll of Waiting

Every month a child remains on the waiting list is a month without someone anchoring them. The impact is cumulative:

  • A child without a mentor misses guidance, encouragement, and relational consistency.
  • They may feel unseen, undervalued, or isolated.
  • Without that support, they are more vulnerable to setbacks in school performance, decision-making, mental health, and risky behavior.

We are not merely seeking someone to “fill a role”. We are inviting Christian adults to step into a life, to say: I see you. You matter. I will show up.

A Call to the Community: This Is Your Role

We all share this mission work. You, as a church member, neighbor, co-worker, parent, grandparent, or faithful citizen, are part of the community fabric. A healthy community is built with developmental relationships – and mentoring is one of the most profound investments we can make in our shared future.

Consider this:

  • One hour per week over a year can change a child’s path.
  • Your presence offers consistency, trust, and stability.
  • You don’t have to be a counselor or expert – you just need to show up with empathy, patience, and a willingness to walk alongside.

If you’ve ever wished to make an impact that lasts, this is it. These 40+ kids are waiting. Will you step into the gap?

Join us. Become the one who shows up. Become the difference.
