In Their Own Words
by · May 11, 2025
At the Youth Horizons foster residences, the work is beautiful – but it’s definitely not easy. It takes grit, patience, grace, and a whole lot of love. Our staff step into that challenge daily, pouring themselves out for the sake of the kids and teens in their care.
The loveliest thing happens on Fridays at the Wren House for girls – leadership sends an email with ‘shoutouts’ to encourage and uplift their caregivers, highlighting their skills and contributions. Recently, the girls turned the tables – and it was the most beautiful thing. That week, the Friday shoutouts didn’t come from leadership. They came from the girls themselves. And what they shared speaks volumes about the power of being seen, heard, and loved.
Miss J’s Words Before She Left
Even though she recently reintegrated home, Miss J left behind a legacy of gratitude. She said she loves Pam because she makes her laugh and even gave her the longest hug as she left. She loves helping Miss Pam find her glasses, too.
She said she loves when Natalie reads to her at night, giving each character a voice of their own, creating a ritual that made her feel safe and delighted. She felt especially cared for by Kristina, who would bring her little treats, like a pop for graduation. And she adored Emily B, who let her wear her ID badge and always gave hugs when needed.
These may seem like small gestures—but to Miss J, they were everything. They made her feel loved, grounded, and secure. Through their consistency and compassion, these women of Wren showed her the love of Christ in a way she will never forget.
Voices from House 2
The girls in House 2 shared just as much appreciation for the Wren staff:
House Counselor Lena was described as “really, really, really nice,” someone who listens, understands, and never judges.
House Counselor Cammie stood out for the way she helps with hair and leaves decorated Scripture notes on bedroom doors – notes the girls often hang up and cherish.
House Counselor Monda was celebrated for her laugh – described as “the best laugh in the world” – and her gift for creating a peaceful, joyful environment.
House Counselor Graci received love for making breakfast, curling hair, watching movies, and gently helping with tough tasks like room cleaning.
In their own words, the girls revealed the incredible depth of connection they’ve built with their House Counselors. Our Wren staff aren’t simply completing work tasks. They’re creating holy moments – offered up with joy, creativity, and compassion.
This Is What Love Looks Like
The daily work at our foster residence homes is incredibly demanding – but when the girls themselves take the time to speak life back into the hearts of their caregivers, we’re reminded just how much that work matters.
To every staff member at Youth Horizons: your love is planting seeds. Your service is forming memories. Your consistency is building trust. And your presence is pointing these kids toward a God who sees them and delights in them.
You are not just doing a job. You are living out the Gospel.
And on this day, the girls said…
Thank you.
