Mentor Program

Six Years of Growing Together

Kim Scott and Jazmine

In a heartwarming video shared by Youth Horizons at the recent Christmas Gala benefit dinner, the inspiring six-year mentorship journey of Kim Scott and Jazmine comes to life. Their story is a testament to the profound impact of a strong and supportive mentor relationship, especially during a young girl’s formative teenage years.

Jazmine was just 12 years old when she was paired with Kim, an enthusiastic volunteer mentor at Youth Horizons. Now, at almost 18, Jazmine reflects on the unwavering guidance and encouragement Kim has provided over the years. “Having a mentor pushes you out of your comfort zone,” Jazmine shares in the video. “It helps you get more ‘adulting’ qualities.”

For Kim, the relationship has been equally transformative. “It’s been a really good opportunity to have the program structure of Youth Horizons to start this relationship that I feel will go on for the rest of our lives,” Kim says.

At Youth Horizons, the foundational work to match mentors and protégés is key to building long-term, developmental relationships. Every pairing begins with understanding the unique needs, interests, and personalities of both the child and the adult volunteer. This thoughtful approach ensures that the match is not just beneficial – but also enduring. In Kim and Jazmine’s case, this effort paid off in ways that neither could have imagined, with Jazmine blending in like one of the family.

Research consistently shows that developmental relationships—like the one Kim and Jazmine share—help young people build resilience, improve academic outcomes, and develop positive self-identity. Jazmine’s story underscores how these relationships can also provide a safe space for growth, emotional support, and guidance toward a bright future.

Youth Horizons’ mentor program thrives on the commitment of Christian volunteers like Kim and the meaningful connections they create with protégés like Jazmine. The six-year bond between these two is a shining example of how a well-matched mentorship can transform lives—not just for a season but for a lifetime.
